Expert Advice on Nose Rings

Summer is always time for a good change and right now I'm sure hundreds of Chicago's finest ladies are thinking of either spicing up their hair, their wardrobe or doing something wild like a piercing! Piercings are so simple because they can be taken out when entering the professional world. Here is some expert advice on piercings from Zaraz Collection owner Heidy Goercke:

1. Should I get my Nose Pierced?
It's the simple jewelry that many ladies will keep for a lifetime. Belly Ring Piercings & Body Piercings outgrow after lifetime experiences like pregnancy, while nose rings adapt to the human body and usually last. It gives a woman that sense of rebellious look  but keeps her sensual & adventures at the same time. Many women get their nose pierced in their 40's.

2. Is a Nose Piecing going to look good on me? I really want one, but I don’t know how its going to look on me?
It the type of jewelry that is hard to tell up front if it will look amazing or just terrible if you get it. It’s the kind of piercing that you have to get before you know. People can barely notice it until you move and they see the shimmer..then you totally stand out! Here is a little trick I like to give to my customers that want it so bad, but uncertain if it will look good.  Go to any local drugstore or beauty supply and buy the little gems that are used for nails. Glue one on your nose and see how you like it. Make sure just to use a tiny little clue, to prevent any chemical reaction or crazy face burns. Please use your own discretion for this test.  There you go, if you like it you know what your next step is going to be.

3. Should I get my nose pierced if I have a "big nose"?
I have worked in the jewelry business all my life and I cannot tell you that a nose ring will only look good on a cute button nose. This is absolutely not true! I have seen many ladies with "big noses" & the nose ring or stud looked so beautiful on them. It matched their nose perfectly and made their whole face just flawless. Every woman is beautiful!

4. Where should I get my nose pierced and how much is a nose piercing?
Find a tattoo shop that you feel comfortable with. Count on spending anywhere between $20 to $60 for this type of piercing, this depends on where you go. At the tattoo shop they will most likely use a 16g corkscrew nose stud. For most ladies, that what to keep it simple and mostly unnoticeable this would be considered a very big gauge. But no worries within the next 2-4 weeks you can change it out to anything you want.

5. What type of Nose Piercing should I get? What type of Nose Piercing is the best?
It is really personal preference and individual style that will determine and complete this look. All styles are available in 14kt gold, sterling silver and surgical steel at Zaraz Collection and you can order today.

HEIDY'S TIPS: Whens shopping for nose rings:

Nose Hoops
They are just very different!
Most  people will try a nose hoop after they have been pierced and just got a little bored with the regular nose Studs and are looking for some adventure in their life. Here apply the same rule as mentioned before you have to try it before you know it. Sometimes it looks phenomenal and sometimes just not right for you.
Thin or Thick: Mostly the thinner the hoop the more conservative this look would be. It is really personal preference and individual style that will determent and complete this look.
Diameter Size: When choosing your ring, make sure to hold it up close to your nose and request a mirror to check how it will hang. Again, personal preference comes also here in place. Do you want it to be just tight to your nose or you want some space and the ring to actually hang.
Design: you can chose anything between ball , swirl or just plain meaning no design and just the ring trough out.

Corkscrew-Curved
PROS: Stays in better
CONS: Mostly available in only bigger gauges such as 18g and 16g rarely in 20 gauge, which will leave your hole bigger, and in most cases a bigger scar after you take it out. Depending on your nose type, typically if you have bigger nostrils, part of the bar will show sometimes & you will need to adjust it in order to not look bigger. If you love to change your nose rings constantly depending on your outfit, you will find that these are quite difficult to get out (unless you get use to them and know how to do it) It’s also a little harder to find many styles and a wide selection in this variant of nose studs types.

Ball End
PROS: This is the favorite of all nose studs. Very easy to put in. Available in many styles & colors. Stays in very well.
CONS: It will hurt when taken out.You might cry.

Pin-Straight-L-shape
PROS: Mostly available in 20g (which is really small and less noticeable.) Easy to put in & take out. Available in many styles and colors. If you decide that you are going to bent the bar, it will be more custom to your nose, which will prevent the bar from looking out of your nostril!

CONS: It may fall out easier and you may lose it faster.

  3. This information has quite a few errors in it. Firstly, most nostril piercings are 18 or 20 guage. While 18 is larger (1mm in fact), having this, very slightly, larger piercing ensures a more secure piercing, with stronger Jewelry. That being said it is extremely important that jewellery is ASTM F-138 certified implant grade stainless steel, ASTM F-136 certified implant grade titanium, Niobium, 14 or 18 karat solid gold. You should ONLY BUY JEWEWLRY from a REPUTABLE PIERCING STUDIO, and not mall boutiques or jewellery stores. Do not buy jewellery from Spencers, Claires or Icing. Those shops sell cheap jewelry, and you cannot verify the quality of material, which means impurities may seep into your blood stream as your piercing heals. NO STERLING SILVER! It contains impurities which are NOT SUITABLE for fresh piercings. Sterling Silver is also not suitable for healed piercings, because when it tarnishes, it leaves a permanent black stain on your skin. Reputable body jewelry companies are: Anatometal, BVLA (Body Vision Los Angeles, NeoMetal, and Industrial Strength, to name a few.) PLEASE DO YOUR RESEARCH and speak to a professional piercer, preferably one that is a member of the ASSOCIATION OF PROFESSIONAL PIERCERS.
